Preliminary Works - Format Festival
So here are the installation shots from the debut of the Silvermine collaboration at Format Festival in Derby. As you can see these images show you how the venue, an old Chocolate Factory paved way for a very exciting install as I worked with the environment to create a feel that was reminiscent of the recycling unit we visited in Beijing, but in addition to that the entire feel and essence of what we wanted to create with the damaged negatives initially.
Using paint and pencil, along with silk screens that I had prepared the install provides a wealth of activity showing the different mediums, processes that we are experimenting with to offer up new ways to view this archive. Hand painted elements dripping down, raw, untreated walls detail the vivid colours and blending options of how the damage grows organically. Intermixed with small kodak prints from Beijing of actual negatives I found from the archive.
These preliminary works offer us the inspiration into what we can achieve and how it maybe possible. The wealth of imagery I found can only be dreamt off and as more images come in form the rice bags all I can say is watch this space as what we will be making is truly beautiful and will be worth the wait!

Back From Beijing...
So I am back! And what an absolutely incredible journey it has been. I still can't quite believe all that I experienced and all that was there to experience, Beijing is a magical place completely different from anything I have ever seen or been part of before with a progressiveness that is quite extraordinary and freeing.
This time two weeks ago I had landed and was on my way into the city, dropping my bags and heading straight out to the studio to start working! Mr Sauvin, a great guide welcomed me to the city with a hard drive of over 500,000 images from the Silvermine Archive to get started on, a quick tour of his studio, an amazing first lunch with welcoming beers in the city centre then off to work! What I found in this archive can only be described as some of the most inspiring, unbelievable images I have ever seen. From images that span over 20 years, this wealth of imagery was not only honoring to work with, but I had a complete nervousness about it also. The sociopolitical and cultural importance of this archive must not be underestimated and I knew being a westerner from the outside passing any judgements around this archive would be problematic.
So my first task was to go through as many images in the first trip as possible to see what images I felt inspired by and what exactly made up these half a million images. In over a week I managed to go through 207,702 images (a number I couldn't have made up!) and above is just an example of what I found, printed up and the from the sort of negatives. This destruction, this damage is what struck me from the source material. A beauty that was so spontaneousness, organic and uncontrolled in its nature it was a great juxtaposition to the very formal, strict portraits found within the archive. The material I found within this framework is quite stunning and this is the route in which our collaboration will develop. This abstraction, these images that are so literally painted bring together many ideas surrounding the medium, archives and the defunctness of the core elements of photography. There is a uniqueness about each and everyone of these damaged negatives and I am very excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead of us.
Finally on my last day, an believable cycle through Tiananmen Square. Understanding a history about somewhere never really prepares you for actuality of visiting the place and here is one of those examples. The square is vast, a space so enormous is can hold up to 1 million people and it was busy on the warm, spring day that I visited. As it is a very busy road you can't actually stand in the middle and kept behind barriers, but being on your bike you get a different view. I cycled through the square and really got an understanding and sense of the space. What's very important to add is you can indeed take pictures, everyone does and locals pose in front of the monument as if like tourists! It appeared it is quite a normal thing to stand there for hours, watching the cars drive past, being part of this space.
From being there only a short period, I felt I learnt a lot about the culture and I can honestly say that we here in the west have only a tiny view/ idea of what China is and has to offer and for me Beijing brought a freedom to my practice that I haven't felt for a while, the art district 798 too brings a totally different theme to the city, so I thank you for that and can't wait for my next trip in the summer.

200th Post, Less Than 20 Hours!
So, it's the 200th post and with less than 20 hours before my trip to Beijing, what better to leave you with than some very new works, literally just tested/ produced on Wednesday for my collaborative project with Thomas Sauvin. What you are seeing, the very first sneaky peek to the first silk screen tests for my intervention into the Silvermine, working with hand drawn screens, produced through my paintings you glimpse the beauty of this medium. These will debut at the Format Photo Festival in Derby where Thomas and I will exhibit our collaborative projects primary, experimental material.
With this in mind, I await an 10-11 hour flight to Beijing and land on Monday morning to bright blue skies, (from what I hear) and an enormous archive of imagery I could of only dreamed of seeing, experiencing and importantly working with. I will be sure to update where-ever as possible and look forward to all that China has to offer!
再見,看到您的到來

Only 2 Weeks to go...
So it is nearly here, this time in 2 weeks I will be BA to Beijing! I collected my Visa this week and all is ready for my residency to start in just a few more days, 15 to be precise! I cannot explain how exciting this trip is going to be, and I think it is the start of many this year. The project which I will be working on is a collaborative one, working with the wonderful Thomas Sauvin, with his archive.
Recently the Guardian spoke to Thomas about the archive, from which I will be working from/ with and here is a little except into the wonders that await me...
"Recently, Thomas Sauvin has been a bit obsessed by women with fridges.
Tourists in front of the Mona Lisa are another fascination: "You have a glass box in front of the painting, dozens of people fighting to see, the flash - it's the perfect horrible image," he said with delight.
Over almost four years, the Beijing-based French artist has amassed more than 500,000 negatives from Chinese amateur photographers which had, until his intervention, been destined for destruction.
"This time is from 1985, when everyday Chinese accessed film photography, to 2006, when digital started taking over," he said. "It's really the birth of post-socialist China...."
You can read more from the article here:
I can't quite explain how incredible our collaborative insight will prove. But what I do know is that we have been testing some ideas already and they are working very well and I will update you while in Beijing and of course the first showing of the progress will be at the FORMAT Photo Festival opening on the 7th March 2013.

Until then, my preparations await me!

Chinese Embassy, Kurt Schwitters, New Ideas...
Well, what a day I had yesterday, probably one of the best days of this year for definite and one to remember for a long time. Firstly off to the Chinese Embassy to put in for my Visa application, collection next week for my journey to Beijing!!! I am so excited I can't quite explain how inspiring this trip will be and what will be created, I organically await its development.
Then onto the Tate Britain to see the new Kurt Schwitters exhibition. I have been eagerly awaiting this exhibit for sometime now after I heard the news about what was going to take place, and I can't quite explain to you how unbelievably moving, inspirational and stunning this show is. As you walk through the Tate Britain's entrance, through the double doors into the first room, you are struck by the sheer enormousness and abundance of his works. As you turn to very corner, at every wall his collages, intermixed with his painting pull you closer to examine a mind set, a history and ethos so poetic, sensitive and thoughtful, one so honest and true it made my head pause and my heart pound.
Paint so thickly applied, cotton so softly adhered, newspapers torn in such a way, every detail of every work is composed with a passion and deep understanding of the material applied and why it has its placed within the form. Schwitters process is so inspiring, and always has been to me. A great influence and lessons taught by his pieces, as you appreciate the life he lead as he made these works and the importance of his ideology in a time when he was deemed by the Nazi's, a degenerative artist.
The exhibition is vast, with every room you enter another pound in your chest, as you see his work move, change and develop collage, painting, sculpture, poems. Everything he touched, he touched with a sensitive hand and with his poetry and short stories a humour that is dadist and entertaining. Hearing him preform his poems is quite an experience!
Words, can't really do justice and in my words can't truly explain the magnitude this man has had on my practice and my mind set, I left the exhibition hours later with a warmth I haven't felt in years and a desire to produce work, ideas for my new collaborative project based out in Beijing. Above are some initial ideas that I worked on yesterday for this new project, more to follow as the process develops.

Amsterdam bound, next trip Beijing...
So it wouldn't be a new year without, some of the old... and what seems more appropriate than a trip to Amsterdam! I am off on Thursday to visit a few friends and see some wonderful shows, including my favourite Dutch duo Mr T & Mr R known as WassinkLundgren for their solo show at Foam Museum, but also a little bit of fashion at the Gasworks for Amsterdam Fashion Week. I know it will be filled with much laughter, wonderful works and then onto another adventure...
Soon after my return, I plan for an incredible trip, one of a lifetime as I prepare for a new collaborative project based out in China. I am off to Beijing on a residency to start producing an extraordinary body of work alongside an amazing Photography Collector which will debut at the Format Festival in March of this year. My works will be in their preliminary stages as we start our process, but what I can advise is that this is something worth waiting for and watching the progress from March into the later part of the year. More to follow as I get prepared and plan my trip.....

Merry Christmas - Thank You Mercedes-Benz!
So here it is..... my commission for Mercedes-Benz, literally just finished and launched yesterday afternoon on MB! Magazine. It was a great project, where I worked with the amazing Lucid-Ly and MB crew on a bespoke project around the new A-Class AMG Sport based here in London. We travelled around to five different locations, all of which are inspirational for me and worked with a photographer to produce new material that I could re-use for collages. A very different take from my normal source material as I art directed the photographer to produce certain imagery I wanted to use!
A great project, resulting in a exciting and fun shoot last week, check out the article here:
After all this excitement, its time for a rest, so I bid you farewell and to have a very happy, joyful and Merry Christmas and look forward to new and exciting times in 2013...... and there is already something wonderful planned, where I am off to Beijing!!!!

Photo-eye Best Books of 2012
I have great pleasure announcing that my first book, "The Photograph as Contemporary Art" has been selected by Tom Claxton and Erik Kessels in Photo-eye's Best Books of 2012!
Tom Claxton writes, "Gibson's debut title intricately culls the pages of curator Charlotte Cotton's (2004) seminal book of the same name. The resulting re-appropriated photo-collages challenge our understanding of the original work and their canonization in photo history- a wonderfully smart, thoughtful and beautifully constructed object."
And Erik Kessels, "Every single one of these books were put together by hand and took about 3 hours to be finished. The photographic collage work of Gibson is very well expressed in this book full of stickers."

It Fashion Feature
While of this Farfetch promotion has been going on, I forgot to mention that I found a great article about my handmade books in this beautiful online magazine from Barcelona! Available in both Spanish and English the site is great and well worth a visit.
The feature talks through my handmade books and here is a little taster,
"Around a year ago, photographer Joan Fontcuberta wrote at Babelia, El País’ literary supplement: “We’re witnessing a photobook boom. […] And all this takes place while bad omens predict both the end of printed paper and the death of photography.”
Firecracker’s October’s featured photographer, former assistant to Martin Parr or Wolfgang Tilmans and FOAM Magazine photography prize winner Melinda Gibson, seems to be determined to fight both of them: during the last Unseen fair, a brand new event for professionals and photography lovers which takes place in Amsterdam, created live a photobook –yes, a photography book, and yes, on printed paper– with the images of her project “The Photograph as Contemporary Art”.
Melinda Gibson seems to be determined to fight the end of printed paper and the death of photography."
